Skis vary in types, telemark skis, alpine skis, mountain skis, step sole skis etc. Telemarkers use skis of their choice. Skis for telemark are usually soft. Skiers who prefer hard skis can select alpine skis. Telemark skis are soft so that it is easy to bend skis with hind legs. Please select your set of skis to meet your purpose, to fit your weight or your technique. Skis with the waist size of over 80 mm are preferred for backcountry and off-piste ski. Skis with the waiste size of 60 -70 mm are usually used for piste and races. It is common to select skis of the same length as own height. Skis longer than height are selected by power skiers and for powder snow. Skis with the waist size of over 85 mm are called "Fat Ski". These skis are good choices to ski on deep powder snow. Skis with the waist size between 74 to 84 mm are called "Semi-Fat Ski". If the waist of skis are too fat, it is difficult to use edges. Semi-Fat skis may be a good pair of skis to enjoy both piste and off-piste. Standard skis with the waist size below 74 mm will be a good pair to use on hard slope and to gain basic telemark technique. Telemark skis with step sole are light and easy to hike up and ski down. Skis are for sliding on snow. It is recommended to clean wax sole of skis regularly and get skis tuned up once in a while. |

Telemark bindings are also also improving The standard norm of telemark bindings, 75mm, is not changed for 25 years and any binding fits to any telemark boots. There are 3 types of bindings, cable, 3-pin and plate. Cable type bindings have more varieties and are rather high-quality. It is recommended to select bindings which fit to purposes. 3-pin bindings are bindings to fix boots by fitting 3 pins in holes on sole. 3-pin bindings are lightweight and very simple. These bindings are quite popular. Plate type bindings are something between cable type bindings and 3-pin bindings. Some models are equipped with the safety release system. Bindings are very important equipments to carry skier's motion to skis. It is important to select bindings which fit to purposes and techniques. Most telemark bindings are not equipped with brakes. Poles are important in keeping balance and rhythm to ski and to walk. There are various types of poles, alpine poles, telemark poles and mountaineering poles. Poles are usually made of aluminum or carbon fiber. Extensible poles are more useful for back country skiing. For backcountry ski, poles with bigger buckets are more useful. It is more convenient if buckets are replaceable. Carbon fiber are popular now because of light weight, but carbon fiber poles are easy to break. Aluminum poles are heavier but it might be better bend than break. Poles are sometimes considered as side players. But poles are very important for telemark ski. Seals are indispensable partner for hiking up. Materials of seals vary from nylon to mohair. There are several different ways to fix seals on ski soles. It is important to keep seals in a good condition. |
